Americans: The Smart Traveler App You Need To Use

Are you American and love to travel or are thinking about traveling in the future? You need to download the Smart Traveler app before you start planning your next trip.

What is the Smart Traveler App and how it can be used

The Smart Traveler is an app that is put out by the American government. The Smart Traveler app shows you all the information you need to know before you go on your trip. Not only that, but it also has what you will need to know if an emergency happens while on your trip. This Smart Traveler app is a one-stop-shop and it’s very easy to use.

Once you’ve downloaded the Smart Traveler app and opened it you are able to tap into the country that you’re going to visit. Once you tap into the country it is going to display a number of different tabs.

The first tab is going to tell you the risk level the American government has for traveling to that specific country. Very helpful to understand if you should travel there and if you are comfortable with the risk levels that your government has determined for that country. They also include links to further information on their website.

The second tab is embassies and consulates. This is super important because it tells you all the information you need to know to get in contact with your embassy or consulate in the country that you’re in. You want to know this information for emergency situations like if you lose your passport or get it stolen, if you are there during a natural disaster or if you get caught up in a riot. It will give you the information you need to contact your embassy or consulate to find out your next steps.

The third tab is the destination description. When you tap into here, it gives you a link that will take you to the Department of State’s information page for that country.

The fourth tab is entry, exit and visa requirements. This is where you want to look at the very beginning of your trip planning. It will tell you all the information you need to know to get into that country. This will include visas, how long you’re going to need on your passport before it expires, how long you can stay in that particular country. Along with this information it includes some external links to the actual government website for further information.

The fifth tab is safety and security. This is where you’ll find all the information of situations that could happen in that country and give you tips on what to do in those situations. It will also give you some tips on what you should be aware of while traveling there.

The sixth tab is local laws and special circumstances. This explains what the laws in that country are to be aware of. It will also tell you a bit about natural disasters, outdoor recreation, LGBT travelers and faith based travelers. They include a lot of links to more information on their website.

The seventh tab is the health tab. Here they tell you the information to dial for the emergency services in that country. This is great because every country has a different number to call emergency services, they are not all 911 like back home.

Here you’ll also find information about medical bills, insurance, prescriptions and vaccinations. You want to ensure you have the up to date required vaccines as well as anything that is an entry requirement for you to enter that country. This tab will also provide you with information on medical tourism, pharmaceuticals, air quality, adventure travel and so on. It will include links to their website for more information on particular things.

The eighth tab is the travel and transportation tab. This gives you road conditions and safety traffic laws, and public transportation information. Anything to do with travel and transportation within that country, you’ll find it here.

At the bottom of the app you have quick links to the STEP program which is where you sign up for the government alerts of whichever country you’re going to.

The advisory link will have a quick view of all the countries that have high level advisories to be cautioned against.

The more link will take you to their social channels and information about the app.

The information and links in the Smart Traveler app are updated whenever there are changes so you know you’re getting the most up to date information in this app and on their website. I have noticed that this app has a bug that needs to get fixed, though.

When you are in any of the tabs you are unable to use the scroll function, so you are only able to view what is shown on your screen. Use a tablet for now to view more information than you can on your phone currently. Hopefully they will fix this bug in the Smart Traveler app soon.

All in all, I highly recommend you download the Smart Traveler app now so you know what you need before you start traveling at a glance and to ensure you have enough time to have everything in place before your next trip.

When you do start planning your next trip, I want to ensure you’ll have a trip without surprises due to Covid-19. Travel has changed because of it so I created a Guide to Travel During Covid-19 to help you understand the changes and things to be aware of so you can be prepared, safe and have an enjoyable trip.
