solo travel, explore, save money

Solo Travel: How to Save Money Pt. 4

Everyone wants to make the most of their travel dollars, especially when you travel solo. With this six-part series I want to show you different ways to save money when traveling solo so you can travel more and/or longer. Use one, some or all of the techniques and you will be well on your money saving way!

This is part four (check out Part 1 here, Part 2 here and Part 3 here) of the six-part blog series that will cover the different areas of a trip. I will be writing them in order of how I go about planning a trip.

  1. Trip planning
  2. Flights
  3. Accommodation
  4. Things to do on your holiday
  5. Getting around
  6. Food & drink

Lets tuck into some exploration tricks.

Join Facebook groups for the places you are going

When you are planning your trip it is very helpful to join destination specific facebook groups. They are a wealth of information usually with a mix of locals and other travellers. Ask them questions on places to see, locals ideas off the tourist track, and any money saving tips they may have. To find these groups, in the search bar on Facebook, type in your destination and click on the destination name. On the results page, at the top click on “groups” and it will populate with all the groups with that destination in their name. Find one or two that peak your interest and join.

Look for and ask if there are senior discounts

Not everyone is excited to be growing older, but when there is a discount to be had wear your age with pride! When you are looking up things online, check to see if there are any senior prices, and when you are at the actual location when you are going to be purchasing your ticket, be sure to ask if there are any senior prices. Some places the age requirement is as low as 50, so no harm in asking. 😀

Look for free walking tours

Check out the tourism websites for the cities you are going to, they sometimes offer these free tours. Also some hotels and hostels include this in the price of your accommodation. I usually Google or search on Pinterest looking for “free walking tours in London” for example. These are perfect for solo travel as it is not costly and you could meet some new people.

Look for coupon codes for tours

When you have decided on a tour to go on for the day or a couple days, be sure to look on Google to see if you can find any coupon codes for it before you purchase. I will search using “coupon codes for xyz tour in London” for example. You can also use “discount code” instead. You may not find any, but no harm in doing a quick search just incase you find one.

Look for last minute tickets

In cities with big theater districts these tickets are your best bet.  They will have same day usually ½ price or discounted ticket booths. Being a solo traveller, your chances of scoring a good ticket increases a lot. If you are not in an area with these ticket booths, you can do two things. Head over to the tourism center and ask if any theaters or discounted last minute ticket sales, this could be for music, dancing, and cultural shows as well. Of you can see what is playing and then head to the ticket booth that afternoon and see if they have any discounted tickets available. Again being a single ticket you may be happily surprised.

There are a lot of ways you can save money on your daily activities with solo travel. One of my favourite things to do is to just go explore neighbourhoods and get a little lost while walking around everywhere. It costs nothing to walk around and window shop. Decide on experiences that are a must so you can properly budget for those and then fill in with the less expensive adventures.

Be sure to check out part five, all about getting around locally, next week so you can continue to save money throughout your trip.
