Riding a Moped Abroad – All You Need To Know
If you are thinking about riding a moped or scooter on your trip, continue reading as I am going to share with you what you should be aware of before you rent one.
It is easy to get wrapped up in the excitement of exploring a new place and when you are wanting to get out and tour a little bit more of where you are, you check out renting a scooter. Unfortunately, things can go disastrously when you are not aware of the risks that are involved.
These are the top three things you need to be aware of when riding a moped:
- Do you know how to ride a moped?
Yes, you can get on it and figure out how to ride it, but there are things that you should be aware of, such as the balance when turning and stopping. If you’ve never ridden one, you want to take a little lesson to understand how everything works, like how to start it and how to stop. Some things are similar to driving, but you want to be aware of how to ride properly and safely.
On my travels, I often see people rent their scooters and they’re only wearing a little tank top, shorts and flip flops. I highly recommend that you do not do this. I have seen so many accidents where people are covered with road rash when they get into a small accident or fall over. There is a reason why you see people back home riding scooters/motorbikes wearing protective gear, proper shoes and a helmet. Make sure you are wearing clothing that covers you when you are riding a moped or scooter, so you are somewhat protected just in case anything should happen. This doesn’t mean you need a full leather outfit. Just wear long pants, socks and running shoes or boots if you have them and a long sleeve shirt or jacket. And always remember to wear the helmet. Some countries don’t require the helmet to be worn, but make sure you always request it even if it costs extra.
A lot of people make this mistake when they get travel insurance thinking that they’re covered for everything that they’re doing on their trip. Most people don’t necessarily read through all the details of their plan seeing what is included in what is excluded. When you do go through your coverage, you will notice that if you rent a car, a scooter, moped, motorcycle, anything abroad, you are only going to be covered for what kind of vehicle you hold a license for. If you rent a car and you have a car license, you’re going to be covered for an accident or an injury.
