How to travel with money

Do you want to know how to travel with money and where to put it all while you’re walking around? I get asked quite a lot about where I put all the money that I’m taking with me while I’m travelling.

When I’m at home I usually carry around a big wallet with tons of cards, change and just crap in there. This is not what I want to take with me while I’m traveling. When I travel with money, I par down everything in my wallet and only take what I’m going to need. I then put everything into a smaller wallet. This way it is a lot easier to stick into smaller bags or pockets. I travel with smaller bags during the day so it’s easier to find everything and is lighter since I don’t need much room for all the cards that we all have nowadays as I am only bringing the ones I will need.

When you are going out for the day, only carry one credit card, one debit card and only travel with money you need for that day. I like to keep a little emergency money in my shoe. I usually stick a $50 bill in my shoot underneath the insole, that way I don’t get sweaty money. The remainder of your cards/money I will put in the safe of my accommodations.

How to travel with money if there is no safe

If your accommodation doesn’t have a safe, or one that is not bolted down, carry your excess money in a travel belt. Now there are all kinds of money belts and you want to get one that is comfortable for you. There are small ones, bigger ones, ones with RFID, which blocks the scanning of your cards by thieves.

The number one thing you do NOT want to do with your money belt is to use it like a wallet. Use your actual wallet for your daily money, and the excess in your money belt. There’s a reason why it’s called a money belt and why it’s supposed to go under your clothes…so no one knows it’s there. Once you use it like a wallet, you’ll be more of a target for thieves. You can use the contents of your money belt in an emergency though.

An emergency could be different things like you can’t live without that jacket and they only take cash or it could be you get your wallet stolen and you need to get back to your accommodation. When you do use your money from the belt money go somewhere that you can be a little more discreet about it and just take out the money that you need. When you travel with money that is extra for the day it is beneficial to take this extra precaution.

Women have another option to carry a few money items around discreetly by using a secret bra stash. It is big enough to put a couple cards and some money and then you clip it on to your bra underneath your shirt. I like to use mini plastic zip bags, you can get them at the dollar store, to put my money in because your money will become sweaty money if you don’t use these.

For guys, when you travel with money and you like having your wallet in your back pocket, I recommend switching it to the front pocket while you travel. I know some of you guys just can’t get your brain around doing that. If you refuse to put your wallet in your front pocket, I highly recommend that you use this little trick. You’ll need a fat rubber band and you wrap that rubber band around the outside of your wallet.

This is not foolproof but it is an extra layer of protection because once you put your wallet into your pocket with the rubber band on it is harder to discreetly pull it out of your back pocket by pickpockets. It’s a great little trick when you’re wanting to keep it in your back pocket.

I hope these tips help you out determining what to do when you travel with money. I do recommend that you don’t carry large sums of money with you when you travel though. Bring some money to start your trip, but then use bank machines in your destinations to withdraw money throughout your trip.
