Baking, Launch Your Travels

When you can’t travel, this is what you need to bake!

Food is such a big part of travelling. When I am unable to travel or don’t have any travel plans, I love to bake something up from another country to make me feel like I am transported there. I am always drawn to the sweet side of food, I inherited my sweet tooth from both sides of my family so there is no denying it!

I wanted to give you some yummy and fairly easy desserts from different parts of the world that you can try. I love to bake. Even if you are not a baker, give it a try. Just follow the recipe…and if that fails, visit a specialty bakery that will more than likely have these desserts available to purchase. 😀

I have added in links to recipes for each type. Just click on the name of the dessert you want to try.

Canada
Nanaimo Bar

These are my favourite Canadian treat and it is Always a staple on dessert trays. I prefer mine without nuts, or I grind the nuts up really fine, and I tend to double the chocolate on top.  Delish!

USA
Chocolate Chip Cookie
Brownie

Chocolate chip cookies are my all time favourite dessert and I love baking them. There are so many different versions of this cookie that I am sure any of the recipes you find are going to be delicious. I am partial to oatmeal chocolate chip as that is what I grew up on.

Brownies are one of those things that I think can be a hit or miss. Some brownies are too cake like and not enough chocolate flavour. I prefer my brownies to be gooey but firm. I am also not a fan when nuts are thrown in them, but that is just a preference.

Mexico
Tres Leches Cake

The traditional cake combines a whole lot of milky goodness that I gotta try to bake.

France
Macarons
Lemon Tart

There are way too many desserts from France and I couldn’t add them all. These two are classic and are easier to bake than others. Macarons are finicky but worth the time (you’ll soon realize why they are pricey little cookies) and you can’t go wrong with a lemon tart. You can even cheat with the pastry part if that intimidates you, but it is much easier than you think.

Italy
Tiramisu
Biscotti

Gotta go with the classics here. They are not difficult to bake, and you can make the biscotti your own depending on what flavour and things you put in it.

Hong Kong
Egg Tarts

These are the rival to the Portuguese egg tarts. I had the chance to try them both, and I thought I was going to like the Portuguese ones better but alas, the ones I had in Hong Kong were the winners in my mind.

Learn how to make your very own from my friend who does Incredible food tours in Hong Kong. You don’t have to travel to Hong Kong, you can join her online course here. You won’t be disappointed.

Japan
Japanese Cheesecake
Soufflé pancakes

I have tried the cheesecake and it is not as sweet as the American version of cheesecake. Next on my list to try are the soufflé pancakes.
