Airport Hacks

Airport Hacks

Airports can be very confusing and stressful for most people. Some simple airport hacks will help since the airport is also the beginning of your trip. You want to have this portion of your trip to go as smoothly as possible in order to depart on the right side of stress. 😀  Here are some of my airport hacks to keep your stuff safe and to make your time spent going through the airport more enjoyable.

Simple Airport Hacks:

  • Don’t charge your devices at the USB power stations in the airports. USB’s can transfer data. You don’t know if they have been tampered with to install malware or transfer your data to unknown people.
  • Bring your own portable charger or use your usb to plug to charge in to an actual outlet.
  • Don’t pick up or use any tech gear you find..including charging cords and thumb drives.

This article on Forbes gives you some great information on keeping your tech safe at the airport.

  • If you are travelling with someone else or are particular on what seat you sit in on the plane, pay to choose your seat when you purchase your ticket.
  • Check in online 24 hours prior to your flight.
  • Check to see what the checkin counter is like for your airline at the airport prior to getting there…it may be a self check-in and self bag drop. Knowing what to expect before you get there will help with the stress factor.
  • Look up the seating on the plane before you choose your seat on the website/app Seat Guru. This way you will know what seats are undesirable when choosing.
  • When checking in/dropping off your checked bag, ask the attendant if your bag is checked all the way through to your final destination. If it is not, you will have to pick up your bag at your layover and re-check it.
  • Carry a portable charger for your phone/devices. Depending on how much you use your device on the plane, you want to make sure you have a full battery when you arrive to where you are going…as well as any layovers you may have.
  • Bring an empty water bottle and once through security fill it up at one of the water stations so you have a full bottle when you board the plane.
  • Have some thing colourful on your luggage, like a ribbon or luggage strap to help you identify your bag.
  • If you are driving to the airport, take a photo of where your parking space is.
  • Bring a small package of antibacterial hand wipes. Luggage trays at security check points are the dirtiest items at the airport.
  • Take a photo of your checked luggage before you check it. If it happens to get lost, you will have a photo to show the airline of what it looks like.
  • Write your email address on your luggage tag for someone to get in touch with you easily.
  • Wear your heaviest clothes and shoes onto the plane instead of packing them to avoid overweight luggage.
