1 Amazing Day in Bangkok
Bangkok is a crazy city…overwhelming when it is your first time. There are so many different sides to this city so every time you come here you can have a different experience.
I have been here a number of times…and I wanted to do something different this time. I was here on a long 22 hour layover on my way to Bali, and yes this was done on purpose. 😀 I knew I could get my Bangkok fill without spending money on separate flights here.
I had a plan before I came here and it turned out to be such a fun day!! First I had booked one night at this super cool hostel (yes there are SUPER COOL hostels out there…and I had stayed at this one before) and then off I went.
The Plan for 1 Day in Bangkok:
Bangkok, and most of Thailand in general has a crazy café culture. There are themed café’s, high end, low end, and everything in between. I knew I wanted to explore this side more and started researching the cool and unusual cafes. I had a good, healthy list going.
I then put them all into Google Maps and slowly started to eliminate the ones that were not going to fit in with my timing, either being too far away or too many places to fit in with the time I had. I was left with 6 different café’s.
Since I knew the city pretty good, I used multiple modes of transportation to get to all of them. Walking, BTS (their skytrain), and motorbike taxi. It turned out to be one of my favourite days I have spent in Bangkok. These are the café’s I ended up going to…I only made it to four of them (one closed early and another was much more suited to non solo times) but there are so many more to explore that I can’t wait to head back and check out new ones and visit some of my favourite ones again.
I started off with the kitsch ones. Although they are fun in theory, they certainly left something to be desired.
Mermaid Castle Café
First stop on my crazy Bangkok cafe’s…Mermaid Castle Cafe…super kitsch, three floors of stuff to buy and a cafe on the third floor. I got the recommended “milkshake”….super cute but super bland. It tasted just like milk blended with ice and food colouring. I did not go for any desserts, as they did not look so great, I decided to wait for another place. Oh and The Littlest Mermaid song with Ariel singing on repeat gets old fast…hahahaha
Unicorn Café
Stop number 2 is another kitsch one, Unicorn Café. Unicorns are super cool and I also am drawn to them as my sister collected unicorns growing up.
Well with these kitsch ones, they get you in the door, but I really didn’t want to have anything here. Ha. I didn’t stay long at this one, got a macaroon to go, and they were not good macaroons, but what do you expect. People eating here have a serious love for unicorns. Oh and you can rent unicorn onesies…rent?! On to the next…
Sretsis Parlor
Ok so cafe number three is so much my style, Sretsis (sisters backwards)…it is pricey but since it was a “Treat Yo Self” day I thought why not! In the grand scheme of things it’s not that pricey if you compare it to what you would probably pay back home. I went for the Princess set, Cherry Bomb which is a cherry mouse on a cookie with chocolate, and a pot of your choice of tea, I chose the Merry Marron which is almond, cinnamon, caramel flavour. It tastes initially like bubble gum almost but has
an addicting flavour! Then they gave me a complementary cookie while I was sitting enjoying myself. I could have sat there all day in this setting listening to wonderful peaceful jazz music. My tea set was 485 baht. Totally worth it, and I can’t wait to go back!
Audrey Café and Bistro
Cafe number 4 was also right up my alley…Audrey’s. They have a few locations and all are decorated differently. I loved this one. I had to get something savoury, so what better than a classy take on tater tots and cheese dip! Ha. Delish. Then I got their signature flowerpot dessert. Didn’t have my first choice of red velvet so went with the chocolate cake with chocolate fudge filling and buttercream icing. Buttercream is not my favourite, but theirs was good…happy it was not a big portion. I again could have stayed here awhile, which I did.
This day was super magical and a great way to see a city differently. I highly recommend recreating a day like this in places all around the world. Every country/city will have something popular with the locals…seek it out and experience it to make your travels way more unique.
